Local Philanthropy Events!

This year's local shamrock events were a big hit. Kappa Delta served over 950 people at our annual Spaghetti Dinner event which featured a band, raffle drawing for over 45 items, and a moon bounce, raising over $7500.  29 teams participated in our KD Kickoff 4v4 Flag Football Tournament where every Kappa Delta has the opportunity to coach a team. We raised over $30,000 this year from both events that were donated to Prevent Child Abuse America and The Prenatal Clinic in Bryan.

Girl Scouts of the USA
girlscoutpatch

In 1998, Kappa Delta adopted the Girl Scouts of the USA as a national philanthropy.  Kappa Delta's mission is to instill confidence, build self-esteem, and develop leadership skills in these young ladies. The Eta Alpha chapter here at Texas A&M hosts four Girl Scout events per semester at the Kappa Delta house for the Girl Scout Troops of the Brazos Valley. Some past events include an Aggie Yell Practice in the Fall, led by the Fighting Texas Aggie Yell Leaders; a Father-Daughter dance in the Spring; a Patch Earning event, where the Girl Scouts complete tasks to earn a particular patch; one Uniquely Me! program per semester; and many more fun events.)

The Uniquely Me! program each semester is crafted to promote self-esteem among girls, ages 8-17, nationwide through the partnership of Kappa Delta and the groundbreaking Dove Campaign for Real Beauty in early 2006. Girl Scouts who participate in these events are able to earn a special Kappa Delta-Girl Scout patch. Thousands of young women and girls benefit from positive interactions with Kappa Delta collegians and alumnae, who serve as volunteers, role models, and mentors to the Girl Scouts by reinforcing the common values of honesty, integrity, friendship and leadership. More about our chapters involvement with the Girl Scouts can be found here!

Prevent Child Abuse America
libphoto_1160857985 Kappa Delta was the first sorority to choose the prevention of child abuse as a national philanthropy.  A Kappa Delta, Donna Stone, championed the cause of preventing child abuse as a national concern, and today her organization has branches in all 50 states.  The month of April has been designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month.  Thousands of KDs in hundreds of communities nationwide host "Shamrock Events" every year to raise money for national and local child abuse prevention efforts.  As a chapter, Eta Alpha puts on KD Kickoff which is a football tournament for the fraternities and men's organizations to raise money for our cause.

Children's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia
kdkids Kappa Delta's support of the Children's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia dates back to 1921.  Beginning with our initial pledge of $1,200 to support two beds, Kappa Delta's commitment to Children's Hospital over the years has never wavered. The sorority's monetary and tangible gifts have totaled more than $2.2 million. Contributions have gone to develop a motion clinic, purchase hospital equipment, medical braces and neurosurgical instruments, provide playground equipment and purchase vans to transport patients.

Orthopaedic Research Awards
Since 1950, Kappa Delta has funded the highly converted Orthopeadic Research Awards through the American Academy of Orthopeadic Surgeons (AAOS).  The three awards of 20,000 dollars each are considered by the academy to be the highest recognition of excellence and promise in orthopeadic research.  Starting with 1,000 dollars contributed in 1950, Kappa Delta has given over 1.36 million dollars to the AAOS today.

National Women's Friendship day
nationalwomensKappa Delta was the first to establish a national holiday to celebrate women's friendship.  National Women's Friendship Day is a holiday created in 1999 for women everywhere to celebrate the importance of our female friends.

The dove self-esteem fund

In 2006, the sorority joined the Dove Campaign for real beauty to promote self-esteem among girls and women.  The campaign is a global effort intended to serve as a starting point for societal change and act as a catalyst for widening the definition and discussion of beauty.
